Our Lab and Research

Since 2018, the Larviculture Lab has been conducting collaborative research to create dependable larviculture strategies for the marine finfish aquaculture industry. Using recirculating aquaculture production systems (RAS), we are working principally with domesticated Striped Bass (DSB), Morone saxatilis. DSB is a premium species, highly marketable and well suited for increased commercialization in NC and throghout the Atlantic coastal U.S. (Anderson et. al, 2022). At this time, the greatest bottleneck to commercializing DSB in RAS involves successful rearing of larvae through to metamorphosis and on-growing to advanced fingerling size for stocking. To address these challenges, our efforts are focused on: larval rearing methods/techniques, nutrition, live feeds, feed manufacture and design, and automated feeding systems for live and inert feeds. We will be updating this site to showcase our work throughout the year. We are grateful for both the NIFA-Southern Regional Aquaculture Center and NOAA Sea-Grant Striper-Hub for their funding support of our research. Numerous additional aquaculture topics can be found on the NCSU Extension Aquaculture Portal, here.
